After elected president, Thomas Jefferson wanted a direct and practicable water communication across the continent and US sovereignty over the land occupied by the many different Indian tribes along the Missouri River. Mary Calista Willard was born April 18, 1863, in Cottonwood, California, the daughter of Henry D. and Mary (Wakefield) Willard and grand-daughter of Alexander H. Willard, a member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. She married Virgil Arthur Scott at age 15. They had a daughter named Stella, born about 1891.
